The white Ambulance approached then reversed towards the rear of Lord Street. Inside the vehicle sat two uniformed men supervised by a short redheaded woman. Her strong Celtic face distraught wet with tears. She dreaded the moment. Took another deep breath and walked slowly towards and through 123’s open backyard door.

Dad’s white fearful face answered her knock on the kitchen window. Inside, the ‘patient’ stood reading a news-paper. Mam in disarray flopped into her favorite chair sobbed silently. The redhead visibly shaken edged slowly forward and entered the tiny parlor not knowing what to say, taken aback by the state of him said,“Hi Doug, it’s me. Brenda, how are yah love?”He recognized straight away.

She was another old pal he had flirted and danced with many times long ago at the Public Hall.“Come on in kiddo,’ said Doug, “Would yah like a cuppa? Hey Mam! Organize a cup of tea for our Brenda. Now then, what’s happening?”Brenda paused by the fireplace- nodded to Mam and Dad. The man of the house rose to his feet stammered,“For Christ sake, please don’t harm one hair of him. I’d never forgive myself.”Brenda started to cry when the two uniformed men from the Asylum swiftly entered. Mam and Dad cringed, held onto each other but there was nowhere to hide.

Doug yelled, “Watch it Jack,” when one of the men locked both of his arms behind his back while the other forcibly led him off. It took less than three minutes, outside Doug’s rending cry for help as they strapped and bundled him into the Ambulance.

The house went as silent as the grave after they left. Mam and Dad stood and clung to each other motionless then rocked to and fro nailed to the floor. The atmosphere electric and overpowering, it was as if the wick on the candle had been snuffed or that someone had died.
